Discover Turmeric Tea

It's a quintessential element of curry, and it gives yellow mustard its signature color. Turmeric adds color, flavor, and health benefits to foods, and it can even be consumed as a warming tea. This antioxidant, anti-inflammatory spice has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for a wide variety of ailments and conditions, including sore throat, cough, bronchitis, and the common cold.

Are you having tummy troubles? It's worth considering turmeric. A small study found turmeric to be more effective at relieving heartburn and other symptoms of indigestion than a placebo, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric tea is particularly soothing for digestive issues. In traditional Indian households, turmeric tea may include black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and other spices that warm the digestive system. While it's possible to make your own, it's much more convenient to opt for a turmeric tea preparation that can simply be added to hot water, warm milk, or warm almond milk.

Studies find that turmeric may also be good for the heart. Curcumin, the compound responsible for the spice's bright yellow hue, has been found to significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks among people who have had bypass surgery. A separate study found that curcumin blocks a wide range of biochemical reactions involved in enlarged heart chambers, inflammation, and fibrosis. It also helps support healthy blood pressure.

The curcumin in turmeric is also beneficial for achy joints. In one study, curcumin was compared to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in 18 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers found that improvements in morning stiffness, walking time, and joint swelling after two weeks of supplementing with curcumin were comparable in both groups. And while NSAIDs are associated with significant adverse effects, curcumin has not been shown to produce any undesirable side effects.

Mounting evidence shows that inflammation is at the root of many chronic diseases that cause our health to deteriorate, so adding turmeric to your diet as well as your supplement regimen is one of the best things you can do to support wellness. In addition to adding turmeric to foods, look for this healing spice in supplement and tea form at your local natural market.
